Guess who was visiting Down Under?

A few days ago, one of our team’s favorite people, Darryl Edwards was Down Under for speaking engagements at AHS NZ 2017 and I had the pleasure of catching up with him at iconic Bondi Beach in Sydney…

If you don’t know who Darryl is, he is a Primal Play Movement Coach, Nutritionist and successful published Author of Paleo Fitness and Paleo from A to Z. I truly admire Darryl, simply because the guy keeps it real. He’s not only unpretentious and humble but he is genuine in his rapport with fellow human beings. Plus he knows his s#!t. That’s why he will be appearing in our second film, We Love Paleo 2.

While we caught up over a naked grass-fed burger and grilled fish, I couldn’t resist asking him a few questions about his participation in our sequel…

1- Darryl, thanks for appearing yet again in another one of our films. Why did you agree to do so? 
I’m passionate about spreading the health benefits of the Paleo lifestyle – which were delivered so well in the first movie. However it’s also important to raise awareness about how we can make better food purchasing decisions that have less negative impact on the health of the planet. The second movie aims to address this point.

2- In WLP2, you talk about a UK burger chain that delivers fresh meat from a biodynamic farm… Can we ever hope for other fast food chains to source their animal products in a similar manner or is it more of an idealist’s dream?
The U.K. burger restaurant in question was a gourmet burger chain so there is an expectation from the consumer to pay more because of the quality of the food, which in part includes the farming methods of the suppliers, in this case biodynamic and organic.

While there is a price premium we can expect the consumer to seek out these restaurants and for more restaurants to offer biodynamic produce on the menus. But it is unlikely that typical fast-food burger joints would follow his model as the price point is so low.

3- What would you say to someone wondering if this film is going to be worth their while?
Absolutely. WLP2 dispels some of the myths associated with meat consumption and sustainability and clarifies what we can do to support our own health goals as well as that of the environment.

An Absolute MUST-HAVE Book

What can I say… we’re suckers for the cool things our people create! Heck, there’s a reason why they made it in WLP: they are awesome, successful proponent of the paleo lifestyle and the community loves their stuff!

In this case, we’re talking about Darryl Edwards’ brand spanking new, Paleo from A to Z. I find the book very useful–there was definitely a gap in the market for such product–I mean how do you explain what ghrelin is to uncle Burt who wants to know what blood “gremlin” is and why he should even care?!

First the design: I’m sorry but who ever said “don’t judge a book by its cover” obviously lived in another era! I mean, that’s all that counts nowadays! If the cover sucks we often think the content will too… because why wouldn’t you have a catchy, sexy cover in this day and age of photoshop and HD stock photography, right?

Luckily Darryl’s book cover is quite simple, playful yet shockingly appealing: the duck tape concept just works.  There’s also something about crisp-white sheets of paper… (Or maybe it’s just me.)

When it comes to its layout, again the book is quite straight forward since it’s a dictionary. What I found really good was the fact that whilst the content hasn’t been dumbed down, it definitely hasn’t been made out to be so complex and elaborate that it can only be understood by someone holding a PhD. This was obviously what Darryl was going for here: mass accessibility. Still, it is worth noting that he has achieved somewhat of a feat here: vulgarizing language that is more often than not complicated and rooted in academia, chemistry and medicine. One only needs to go to the “Resources” section (page 301) to see what humongous task creating this book would have represented for Edwards.

Overall the book covers reasonably well all of the terminologies commonly used by people adhering to the lifestyle and is yet another tool (just like this cool little documentary about paleo coming out soon-wink wink), that can be used to educate ourselves and loved ones about human health.

There’s another exciting thing about The Fitness Explorer’s new book: it’s being translated into German, Spanish and Italian and those versions will be released by the end of this year.–This will no doubt fill the global need for such a reference book.
